What's all this jargon about?
Excavator = digger
Digger Boom = the arm of the digger
Digger House = the cab, counterweights, fuel tank, hydraulic tank, and the engine
Attachment = Ancillary tools that connect to a digger, increasing the amount of tasks that can be done
Swing = The space required when the digger is rotating
Digging Depth = imagine the digger on the edge of a river; this measures how far the digger boom can reach down (vertically)
Digging Height = also known as cutting height, this measures how far the digger boom and bucket can reach straight upwards
Digging Reach = this measures how far the digger boom and bucket can reach along the ground
ROPS = “Roll Over Protection Structure” – designed to reduce the possibility of an operator, when also wearing a seatbelt, from being injured in the event of a 360-degree roll over.
FOPS = “Falling Object Protection Structure” – provides the operator with protection from falling objects, such as rocks.
TOPS = “Tip Over Protection Structure” – designed to reduce the possibility of an operator, when also wearing a seatbelt, from being injured should the machine tip over.
Sheep’s Foot = Rollers with rectangular-shaped “feet” used to compact soil and silty clay.
Wet hire = hiring a machine and an operator
Dry hire = hiring a machine on its own (without a driver)
